Bosnia

Europe's debt crisis is undermining the common values that once united the continent and the single currency risks opening up new rifts across the European Union, Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti said yesterday (9 September).

While NATO ministers last week agreed to half-open the door for Bosnia and Herzegovina to join the alliance, EU diplomats told EurActiv that the European Union wanted to "militarily disengage" from the Balkan country, where it maintains numerous peace-keeping forces.

The ghosts of Bosnia's past are shackling its economic future and observers believe there is little prospect of improvement after elections due in the ethnically-divided country later this year.

On an official visit in Sarajevo, Croatian President Ivo Josipovic apologised for crimes committed in Bosnia and Herzegovina during the 1990s and called on the entire region to cooperate more closely in all areas, the Hina news agency reported.
