On 20 August, the European Commission approved grants worth 800 million euro for the restructuring and conversion of vineyards. Due to the reforms made to the common agricultural policy (CAP) introduced in 1999, Community aid was made available for 2000 and 2001.
The Commission adopted two positions:
- The first decision provides for the 2000 and 2001 marketing year. It deals the re-allocation of the remaining balance (115 million euro out of 380 million euro originally provided for) to those Member States that have requested additional funding. The allocation of the 380 million euro was decided by the Commission on 25 July 2000 (Decision 2000/503/EC).
- The second decision lays down a provisional financial allocation for 2001 and 2002. The budget available for this action will be around 422 million euro.
