On 18 February, the Commission presented a regulation on the transboundary movement of genetically modified organisms on 18 February to implement the UN Protocol on Biosafety.

The objective of the proposed Regulation is to establish a common system of notification and information for exports of GMOs to third countries. This will serve to ensure an adequate level of protection for the transfer, handling and use of GMOs that may have adverse effects on the conservation and the sustainable use of biological diversity, also taking into account risks to human health.

The Regulation will apply to the export and unintentional transboundary movement of all GMOs.
