The European Commission’s latest economic forecast ranked Poland as the fastest developing EU member state in 2012, although it revised the country's growth estimate downwards for 2013. But analysts appear much more optimistic than the EU executive and insist that the Polish economy will do even better next year.

Bulgaria passed a new law yesterday night (3 May) allowing the treasury to confiscate private assets that cannot be validated by a legal source of income, reported Dnevnik, EurActiv's partner publication in Bulgaria. The measure marks a further step in the country's attempt to win the EU's confidence in its judiciary system.

Romania's leftist opposition alliance USL which has toppled the country's two-month-old government in a vote of confidence will unveil a new cabinet lineup on 7 May, according its social democratic leader Victor Ponta, who is set to become the next prime minister.

The Romanian government, which had been in office for just two months, fell on Friday (27 April) after losing a vote of confidence in parliament. A new government is expected to be formed within the next ten days.
