Two recently adopted Commission decisions on harmonisation of the radio spectrum for use by short-range and radio frequency identification (RFID) devices are set to "help create a single market for wireless devices, stimulate their uptake, boost industry in this vital sector and provide benefits to all Europeans", said Information Society Commissioner Viviane Reding.

Currently, the use of the radio spectrum is fragmented across the EU-25. Once harmonised, the same wireless products can be used anywhere in the EU and manufacturers would thus need to make only one product for the whole internal market. This could mean lower prices for consumers as new mass-market wireless devices and applications are developed and marketed throughout the EU.

Harmonisation is expected to "assist trade flows" as well, as RFID tags are increasingly used in businesses such as retail and logistics, tracking of goods and people, security and alarm systems.

The EU radio spectrum policyexternal , adopted in 2002, aims to ensure harmonised conditions for the efficient use of the radio spectrum in the EU to support specific Community policies, such as electronic communications, transport, R&D or broadcasting.
