The Turin Winter Olympics 2006 will be the first time that such a major sporting event as the Olympics has used EMAS (the European Eco-Management and Audit Scheme).
The Turin Organising Committee (TOROC) was given the green light for EMAS in September 2004 and is currently looking to renew its certification as part of EMAS's three-year cycle.
The International Olympic Committee recognises the environment as the third component of Olympism. TOROC is also producing an annual 'sustainability report' based on the methodology of the Global Reporting Initiative and the IOC project Olympic Games Global Impact, tracing the implementation of its commitments made on environmental, ethical and social principles set out in the Charter of Intents (see EurActiv 23 February 2005).
There are also two stadiums that have been EMAS-registered for the World Cup in Germany 2006 - the Allianz Arena in Munich and the Frankenstadium in Nuremberg.
