Croatians voted yesterday (14 April) for 12 members of the European Parliament. The low turnout of 20.74% is explained by voters' perception that the election was "unimportant", analysts said.

The opposition centre-right HDZ party won six MEP seats with 33.1% of the votes. The ruling Social Democrats (SDP) came in second, with 31.5% of the votes which would allow them to have five seats. The Labour Party obtained 5.7% and will have one seat.

The elected MEPs will take their seats as of 1 July when the country is expected to join the EU. For the time being Croatia is represented in the European Parliament by non-voting observers.

Despite the low turnout, officials called the vote "historic" and a key milestone on a path marked by years of difficult reforms. On the eve of the vote President Ivo Josipović had urged Croatians to cast ballots. "”It is extremely important not only on a symbolic level but since we enter the decision-making process in the EU,” he said.

Record remains unbeaten

The low turnout of Croatian European election vote is close to the record low turnout of 19.63% registered in the European elections in Slovakia in 2009. Lithuania registered the second lowest rate with 20.54%. The average turnout of the 2009 European elections in all 27 member countries was 43.24%.

When Croats voted in a referendum to approve the country’s EU accession treaty in January 2012, the turnout was also relatively low, at 43.7%. At that time, two-thirds of the Croats said ‘yes’ to the country’s EU membership.

Several analysts said that this time Croats didn’t see the election as important. Indeed, the elected MEPs will spend less than a year in office, as Croatia will vote together will all EU countries again in European elections in May 2014.

Zarko Puhovski, a political analyst, also blamed the lack of campaign. “Instead of an election campaign, we had weeks of virtual electoral silence,” Puhovski told the Associated Press.

According to some, the enthusiasm of Croatians for EU membership is dwindling as the exit from the eurozone crisis remains uncertain.

The most recent opinion polls show that only slightly more than 50% cent of Croatians are supporting their country's EU membership.

Positions:

"I warmly congratulate our colleagues from the HDZ Party who lead the list that achieved a great result yesterday, winning the elections and gaining 6 out 12 seats," Joseph Daul, chairman of the European People's Party (EPP), said in a statement.

"As I said three days ago in Dubrovnik, Croatia has come a long way since its independence. It is hard to believe that not so long ago the country was still ravaged by war. Now it is about to enter the greatest club of democracies. It is only fitting that the party that has lead Croatia to independence is now symbolically leading it to the EU," Daul added.

COMMENTS

  • I see that the people of Croatia are not enamoured with the eussr, and in line with the other countries ensnared in this vile corruption ridden democratically deficient political entity only 20.74% of voters bothered with it. This is due to the realisation of the majority that their vote has no power, the eussr is run by a bunch of unelected political failures who make up the commission. Individual nations have been subjugated and as the euro has shown, the lowest common denominator one size fits all over regulation is destructive. My condolences to the people of Croatia your country had died.

  • Europe EU support continue for the Titoist-style Communists cronyism and rampant corruption that is stunting the country's development. NOW! is paying off. These same EU supported Communists told us that 60% of Croatians vote for EU and now EU supported Communists want us to believe the lie that just 20% voted for who represents us Croats in EU. Such lies can only come from the Communists gang in government.

And for you EU gang! Hunger for Croatia's Adriatic coast and land is not fair. But Slovenia a part of the EU gang, is not the only country, EU's land grab crime is lower then we as a free people can prosses. Your support or bullying when necessary Titoist-style leaders in Croatia for Adriatic coast, land and fishing in Croatia's waters. You enable Titoist-style Communists with subsidies and foreign aid to preserve their fancy cars, apartments and privileged status. Yet as the bulk of the Croatian people suffer.

One of many examples: Slovene and EU fishermen like to be able to go about their business unhindered in Croatian waters. What is sad about all this, is the fact that Italy and Slovenia, now a part of the EU gang, disallow Croatia from fishing in their waters, yet they create a storm if Croatia wishes to place the same regulations on their own waters. This is an example of a richer country taking from a poorer country's resources. If this poorer country says anything, then the richer country calls his gang EU.

And the EU wonders why there is a growing anti-EU feel in Croatia.

  • Why are there so many EU-haters on this site?
I don't understand. If someone hate something, he/she visit a haters site. Like, you know, a Nazi would visit a Nazi site, not a Hebrew site (many EU-skeptics are Nazis, so, its a good comparison).
No one like to read things regularly about something he/she hate.
So, there are an answer to my question: all or allmost all of eu-skeptics on this site are trolls or employees of some lobby groups (apparently paid by big British corporations)

  • Didn't take long for someone to post about nazi's did it, well the nazi principles aren't far from the eussr principles, making europe 1 country under the auspices of an unelected power for example so it is the europhiles who are more related to nazi principles than the people Otto is accusing of those leanings. To say that you can't post anything negative on what he considers is a europhile site, is typical of the closing down of democratic principles that the eussr considers is essential to keep it running Otto is just blindly following that ideation.
