Bulgaria's Socialist President Georgi Parvanov returned to power on 29 October by a large margin in the second round of voting, beating Nationalist Volen Siderov.

The 75%-majority re-election of Bulgaria's President Parvanov is a landslide. In the second round, he swept away Nationalist Volen Siderov, whose party Attak has been campaigning on an anti-minority platform.

The pro-European Parvanov will thus preside over Bulgaria's entry into the EU on 1 January 2007.

Socialist Prime Minister Sergei Stanishev said: "The categorical victory of the president is a very good sign for the European future of our country."

Political analyst Kantcho Stoychev interpreted Parvanov's re-election as a sign of stability: "It is another proof that the transition period in Bulgaria is over. During the transition a president's re-election would have been impossible, and this is exactly what we see now".
