Breaking News:

'Middle-East oil for North African sun?'

Published: Thursday 15 March 2007

Sir,
Dr Gerry Wolff's letter was printed in my local paper on 13 March, 2007. Concerning Wolff's opinions and the follow-up letter Electricity competition barriers must be removed - Robert J. Jeekel, Eurometaux, concentrating solar energy (CSP) does not increase the energy available from solar, and higher temperatures mean more heat loss, so a 'good' voltaic system would be better, if one existed.

But to the more general point: it hardly seem reasonable that Europe would trade depending on Middle-East oil for depending on North African sun, and the transmission system needed would be huge, expensive and no doubt would meet with opposition.  We have plenty of resistance to even one new transmission line into Wisconsin from Minnesota.  I doubt our 'Greens' would tolerate the power lines needed to import our power all the way from Arizona.
