Breaking News:

EU 'a bully' over Croatia

Published: Wednesday 20 December 2006

Sir,
In Croatia, the UN and the European Union have lost respect not just because of their decisions, but also because of their inconsistency. To her huge credit, Chief Prosecutor Carla Del Ponte - like Louise Arbour before her - refuses to strike deals to allow some suspects to stay free while others are arrested. In fact, Arbour’s template announced several years ago remains the watchword.

How can we fight the jihad when Carla Del Ponte and the EU are allowing it to continue? The Serbian Communist Yugoslav Army (JNA), killed at least 15,000 Croatians and forcibly displaced, ('cleansed') some 220,000 Croats from about one-third of Croatian territory. More than 15,000 Croats were murdered in areas occupied by rebel Serbs, and more than 4,000 are still missing.

Croatians should indeed be proud of their liberation from such a hell. Slovenia and the EU are the bullies, blocking the opening of talks on a new chapter of EU legislation with Croatia due to a fishing dispute. According to a report by Austrian news agency APA, the Slovene foreign ministry confirmed it has not given the green light for the EU to open the next chapter of legislation up for negotiation - on fisheries.

Under EU rules, each member state has to agree to both the opening and closing of legislative chapters - one refusal blocks the whole process. Slovenia is engaging in foot-dragging tactics over fishing rights and land on which Slovenia would like to place a bilateral border.

Croatia will be transformed into the Puerto Rico of Southeastern Europe: an impoverished economic and political colony of Brussels, whose main purpose is to serve as a tourist destination for vacationing Europeans. Yet as the bulk of the Croatian people suffer, the former communist, as well as current leaders' elites, will prosper.
