Fisheries ministers putting short-term gain ahead of marine environment

Regarding 'Fisheries: Parliament calls for discard ban':

In the article, Swedish MEP Carl Schlyter (Greens/EFA) estimates that discarding by fishermen results in over a million healthy fish being thrown back into European waters each year, constituting a "serious ecological and economic problem". 

The figure is over TWO BILLION - nearly half a billion haddock are discarded annually in the North Sea and 15+ million 60gms whiting in the Clyde nephrops fishery. These are merely the known figures. 

Discards are the true indicators of the effectiveness of fisheries ministers, who are putting immediate political and economic gain ahead of the interests of the marine environment.
