MEPs support energy efficiency measures for electrical goods[fr][de

Published: Wednesday 16 March 2005    | Updated: Thursday 5 April 2007

The Parliament's Environment Committee has voted overwhelmingly in favour of measures to improve the energy efficiency of every day consumer electrical products such as hairdryers, computers and heaters.

Every day consumer electrical products could soon be on their way to contributing to huge energy savings, following the vote of a report by Frédérique Ries (Belgium, ALDE) in the Parliament's Environment Committee (56 in favour, 1 abstention).

The committee reintroduced amendments scrapped by the EU Council of Ministers on priority products where the measures would contribute most to energy savings. These include heaters, electric motor systems, lighting, domestic appliances, office equipment, consumer electronics, ventilating and air conditioning systems. For personal computers, energy consumption in off-mode should as a general principle be minimised.

The products in question are said to be responsible for about 40% of CO2 emissions into the atmosphere and to contribute to global warming.
