Published: Tuesday 19 April 2005

From 1 January 2007, the EU Council will be prepared and chaired by teams of three countries.

If and when the new Constitutional Treaty comes into force, there will be a President of the European Council for 30 months, and a European Foreign Minister, who will chair the General Affairs and External Relations Council. The team will be required to split the responsibilities for certain policy areas equally between the three presidencies. The list of forthcoming presidencies has already been drafted by EU foreign ministers. The teams, comprising three countries, will lead the Union from 1 January 2007.
