Post an EU jobIn a two-day brainstorming conclave, the Commission prepared its contribution to the June Council's debate on how to proceed with the constitution after the no votes in two founding member states. The Commission proposes a "positive, policy-driven agenda".
The Commission recognises that there is no consensus on the way forward with the constitution after the "period of reflection", according to a senior Commission official. Therefore, the Commission wants to concentrate on delivering results, especially in the area of growth and jobs. It will use the 50th anniversary of the Union's founding Treaty of Rome as an opportunity to restart the debate on the EU's future. It will be a "year of re-assessment", said the commission's official in a press conference on the outcome of the two-day seminar held in the small Flemish town of Lanaken from 27-28 April.
The Commission is expected to present a paper for the June Council on 10 May. The EU leaders will discuss the future of the constitution during their European Council in Brussels on 15-16 June.
