Study: Cancer patients have unequal access to drugs

Published: Wednesday 5 October 2005    | Updated: Friday 8 September 2006

A study shows that cancer patients' access to treatment varies across Europe and highlights the need for action to redress the current inequalities.

A report entitled 'A pan-European comparison regarding patient access to cancer drugs' has found that cancer patients' access to new cancer drugs/therapies depends on the country in which they live.

The report conducted by Karolinska Institutet, a Swedish medical university, names Austria, Spain, and Switzerland as the most advanced countries in terms of early adoption and availability of new cancer drugs while the Czech Republic, Hungary, Norway, UK and Poland lag far behind.

The EU's next framework programme for research (FP7) has earmarked 8.3 billion euro for health research. Cancer is highlighted in the activity aiming to translate research into therapies in major diseases.
