Post an EU jobThe EU needs a more democratic comitology procedure which does not undermine the Parliament's role in the EU decision-making process, argue Vicky Marissen and Aurélie Portalier from the European Training Institute (ETI).
In this paper, Vicky Marissen and Aurélie Portalier point to an alarming number of comitology procedures – 50 cases since 2004 – which have bypassed the Parliament’s right of information.
According to the authors, this situation has become "unacceptable", particularly in areas where comitology decisions have a direct impact on EU citizens' daily lives. This includes decisions on packaging waste, materials that come in contact with food, Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) and pesticides.
The authors urge for more transparency in the procedure and consider it of "utmost importance to monitor future comitology procedures".
