ASEM cites research co-operation as success story

Published: Friday 8 September 2006    | Updated: Friday 15 September 2006

ASEM summit pitches the Trans-Eurasia Information Network (TEIN2), a high-speed telecommunications network for research and education linking up EU and South-East Asian researchers as its success story.

The Trans-Eurasia Information Network 2 (TEIN2external ) is a largely European Commission-funded network linking research and education communities across the Asia-Pacific region. It is directly connected to the pan-European research and education network GÉANT2external , qualified as the world's most advanced international research and education network.

TEIN2 thus connects European and Asian researchers and provides a framework for a true global research collaboration. The sixth Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEMexternal ) on 10-11 September 2006 will showcase TEIN2 as an ASEM success story. Examples of collaboration include tele-medicine, disaster warning and research into avian influenza.

The network increases direct internet connectivity in the fields of research and education between Europe and Asia, aims to improve intra-regional connectivity within Asia and to act as a catalyst for the development of national research networks in the developing countries of the Asia-Pacific region.
