The development round table held on 17 March 2003, dealt with the issues of health, CSR awareness in developing countries and access to renewable energy.
In line with the structure of previous round table meetings, general presentations set the context for the discussion on development, followed by three sets of presentations on specific topics. The first set dealt with the issue of
healthunderlining the importance of business - NGO partnerships in the fight against deadly diseases in developing countries. The representative of Heineken described how they provided better healthcare to their employees. A discussion then emerged on whether companies should limit their help to employees or they should extend it also to the local communities. The second set of speakers came from Brazil and described how they were raising
CSR awareness, particularly through a business network. The third discussion topic focused on a
renewable energy projectbased on a presentation by BP. In this project, BP took a new approach and worked closely with NGOs and the local communities, identifying their exact needs and training locals to perform maintenance work.
