Sun shines on German solar energy

Germany’s solar energy output defied government subsidy cuts to rise by a record 60% last year, according to the German Solar Industry Association BSW-Solar.

“Solar power has become an indispensable ingredient for the success of the energy transformation,” said Carsten Körnig, BSW-Solar’s chief executive.

The clean energy technology generated more than 18 billion kilowatt hours of electricity in 2011, BSW-Solar figures showed, enough to power the state of Thuringia – or 5.1 million households for a whole year.

The renewables surge comes despite a 13% cut in Germany’s solar subsidies last year, which will be augmented by a further 24% reduction in 2012, implemented in two phases.

Yet because of sharp oil and gas price increases, coupled with price falls in solar technology, Körnig predicted that by 2014, solar power would not need any more government support than ocean-based wind-farms.

“What the solar industry now needs are reliable political conditions,” he said. “This is indispensable for the continued expansion of renewable energy sources and for maintaining an attractive climate of investment in Germany.”

BSW-Solar has called on the government not to tinker with the German government’s proposals for a phase-down of subsidies.

Since 2007, solar panel prices in Germany have already fallen by close to 50%.

Solar power currently contributes some 3% of Germany’s electricity supply, but this is forecast to grow to around 10% by 2020.

COMMENTS

  • All the time you are reporting on the advent and continuation of traditional Solar Panels and their configuration as Photo-Voltaic cells in the hard Thin-Film substrates when the issue is that these are old fashioned and are about to be superceded.

Already the new version of Photo-Voltaic cellular materials are here which will transform this vision by reducing the costs to less than a quarter of the current system. This development which uses spray-applied paint-style membranes that are based upon using micro-particles that align themselves usp in the substrate so that they can be connected easily is with us now.

The flexibility of this system means that any surface can now be sprayed with this system easily and readily simply and effectively. A dam wall, an autobahn cutting, any bridege, crash barriers, roof structures, civil engineering structures etc., canopies to airports and building faces and the list goes on can now all be coated with this system. The importance of this is the fact that now with a cheaper system that performs just as well as the traditional thin film plates there is no need to be resticted to straight surfaces. This new system can be applied just like painting and as well as being a Pho-Voltaic system it also acts as a paint and surface protection system.

The company developing this system has said that it intends to be located in Malta and locate a €200 Million centre there to mai=ufacture the system. It also seems that they are going to develop a second plant in Istanbul.

So do not rest on your laurels with the current system of Photo-Voltaic systems for this new development will take over from you in Germany and China within the next four to five years and get rapturous applause for reducing the costs of Photo-Voltaic systems to a reasonable level which everyone can afford.

  • I think the new system will eventually help developing countries like mine to come out of the looms, provided that the fossil lobbies are tackled with.More information needs to be posted and discussions encouraged.

  • To Sunghoon...

This is what we need in Soythern Europe as well.

Photovoltaic cellular systems at this level of sophistication and cheapness - I read as being lower than 20% of the German system and one which can be applied by spraying the surface materials is a brilliant concept.

Why has it taken so long?

Having the Company in Malta is a brilliant move, and I for one will get my Investers to put money into the Company.
