European elections: a victory for abstention!

The European Parliament elections provide an opportunity to survey the political party landscape in the CEEC.

 

  • Czech Republic(28.3%): ODS (right, opposition, moderate Eurosceptics) 30%, 9; Communist Party (opposition) 20.2%, 6; Liberal Democrats (opposition, pro-European) 11%, 3; Christian Democrat Union (majority, Europe-friendly) 9.3%, 2; Social Democrat Party (Party of the Prime Minister, pro-European) 8.8%, 2; Independents 8.1%, 2.
  • Hungary(38.4%): FIDESZ (opposition, right) 47.4%, 12 ; Hungarian Socialist Party (governing) 34.3%, 9; Alliance of Free Democrats (government coalition) 7.7%, 2 and Democratic Forum (opposition, centre right) 5,3%, 1.
  • Poland(20.76%): PO (centre right, opposition) : 25.2%. 15 ; League of Polish Families (opposition, far right Catholic Europhobe) 15.7%, 9; PIS (opposition, conservatives, moderate Eurosceptics) 11.8% ; SLD (socialists, governing, pro-European) 10.4%, 7; Samoobrona (leftwing populists, Eurosceptics) 10.1%, 6; UW (moderate Europhiles) 8%, 6; PSL (Peasant Party today in the opposition, Eurosceptics) 5,5%, 3 and SPDL (social democrats, dissidents from the SLD, pro-European) 5% et 3 .
  • Slovakia(16.9%): Christian Democrat (Party of the Prime Minister, centre right) 16.8%, 3; LS-HZDS (" populist " opposition and Eurosceptics) 16.7%, 3; SMER (left, opposition) 16.58%, 3; Christian Conservatives (right, government coalition) 15.9%, 3; Coalition of the Hungarian Parties 13%, 2.
  • Slovenia(28.3%): New Slovenia (centre right, opposition) 23.4%, 2; Liberal Democratic Party /Party of the retired (Party of the Prime Minister, centre left) 21.9%, 2; Slovenian Democrat Party (rightwing opposition) 17.7%, 2; Social Democrats (former communists, government coalition) 14.7%, 1.
  • Estonia(26.7%): Social Democrat Party (centre left, opposition) 36.8%, 3; Union of the Estonian People (centre left, opposition) 17.5%, 1; Reform Party (government coalition, liberal rightwing) 12.2%, 1; Union for the Fatherland (conservatives, opposition) 1; the other Parties, including Res Publica, the Prime Minister's party, are not represented in the European Parliament.
  • Latvia(41.2%): Union for the Fatherland and Liberties (rightwing nationalists, opposition) 29.8%, 4; New Era (right, opposition) 19.7%, 2; PCTVL (left, pro-Russian minority) 10.7%, 1; People's Party (right, government coalition) 6.6%, 1; Voice of Latvia (liberal) 6.5%, 1.
  • Lithuania(39.4%): Labour Party (populist, left, opposition) 30.3%, 3; Social Democrats (Party of the Prime Minister, centre left) 14.4%, 2; Union of the Fatherland (right, opposition) 12.4%; Liberal Union/Centre Union (centrist, governing majority) 11.2%, 2 ; Peasants' Party/Party for a New Democracy 7.4%, 1; Liberal Democrat Party (populist opposition) 6.8%, 1.
  • Cyprus(71.2%): Democratic Union DISY (right) 28.23%, 2; Workers' Progress Party AKEL (communist, member of the ruling coalition) 27,9%, 2; Democratic Party DIKO (right, government coalition) 17.1%, 1; For Europe (centre right) 10.8%, 1.
  • Malta(82%): Nationalist Party (opposition Eurosceptic) 48%, 3; Labour Party (ruling, pro-European) 41%, 2.
