The Commission is to discuss the free movement of workers after the enlargement of the European Union at its weekly meeting on 20 March. The discussions are based on the Commission
working paperfrom the beginning of March, setting out five options to deal with this issue. The working paper says there will be no mass labour migration after enlargement. However, Germany and Austria are expected to receive the largest numbers of Central European immigrants, and both demand lengthy transition periods to curb migration.
The EU Member States will consider the study when they prepare their common negotiating position on the free movement of persons in April. One of the possibilities is to introduce different transition periods for each candidate country.
