Macedonia protests signal surge of radical Islam

Ethnic Albanians rallied in several Macedonian towns on Friday (11 May) to protest against a police operation that saw suspects arrested in the deaths of five people. The regional press saw the protests as a sign of rising radical Islam in the country.

Thousands of ethnic Albanians demonstrated against the arrest of three men charged over the killing of five Macedonians last month.

Photos from the scenes showed that many of the protestors waved Saudi flags and that some wore T-shirts with inscriptions such as “Islam will dominate the world”.

On 13 April five slain Macedonian fishermen were discovered beside a lake in the village of Smiljkovci north of Skopje. Four of the victims were in their late teens or early 20s. The fifth was a man in his 40s. On 1 May, police arrested 20 people, including radical Islamists who reportedly fought with the Taliban in Afghanistan, as suspects in the murders.

Demonstrators shouting slogans such as "UCK" (the now-defunct liberation movement in Kosovo in the late 1990s), "See you in the mountains" and "Greater Albania", threw rocks at police, the SETimes reported.  The news site also reported that protestors attacked the offices of Skopje's Chair municipality whose mayor, Izet Medziti, belongs to the ruling Albanian party Democratic Union for Integration (DUI). "Clearly they do not want co-existence - their slogans betray the goal to misuse Islam to create an ethnically pure state, which means conflict in the region. Slogans in support of the Democratic Party of Albanians also betray the involvement of some political parties to benefit from such an abuse of religion," Ivan Babanovski, a former security studies professor, told SETimes.

The Serbian news agency Tanjug reported that protestors also carried banners against the Macedonian government and Prime Minster Nikola Gruevski, whom they called a “terrorist” and a “Chetnik”, a reference to the Serbian nationalist movement that used terror tactics against Muslims during World War II. They shouted “murderers” at the police.

The demonstrators also carried banners saying that “Serbs and Macedonians” were responsible for the murder of the five men.

Protests were also reported in the towns of Gostivar and Tetovo.

There is widespread belief among analysts and the Macedonian public that the protests are intended to destabilise Macedonia prior to the NATO summit in Chicago on 20-21 May. Macedonia’s bid to join NATO was blocked in 2008 by Greece over the long-standing name dispute between Athens and Skopje.

Some analysts in the region now worry of renewed attempts to carve out an ethnic Albanian state in western Macedonia.

According to security experts, there are an estimated 5,000 battle-hardened Islamists from the wars in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo and a past conflict in Macedoniа living in the region.

Dzevad Galijašević, a member of the Southeast Europe Expert Team for the Fight against Terrorism and Organised Crime, told SETimes the number of Wahabbis followers is far greater. He argued that regional countries should cut off the Wahabbis' financial channels, and arrest the leaders and most prominent members who espouse violence.

COMMENTS

  • Chetniks were the anti-fascist movement in the former Yugoslavia against Nazi occupators and their fascist puppet regimes of which Croatian independent states was the most bloodthirsty. Chetnik-s were the regular army under the Yugoslav government in exile, and their commander, general Dragoljub Mihailovic received posthumously the Legion of Merit from the American president Harry S. Truman "for his contribution in victory of the allies over fascism".
One of the highest ranking German officials, Herman Neuebacher, special envoy of the Third Reich to south-eastern Europe wrote thta in the Balkans only two nations were occupied - Serbs and the Greeks. This truth is silenced today.

  • All this is propaganda by the Macedonian Government with the help of the Serbs to create fear within Europe. As far as hatred & mistreatment of minorities go look no further than the atrocities the serbs committed against civilians that eventually saw the colapse of Yugoslavia

  • Macedonia consist of ~65% Macedonians, 20% Albanians and the rest are Serbian, Turks, Roma ...
In 2001 there was conflict between Macedonians(Christians) and the Albanians(Muslims).
Now the Albanians want conflict again, so they can create Great Albania, and they want territory from Macedonia, Serbia, Greece, Montenegro, with other word, from all countries that surrounding Albania.
They succeeded in ripping Kosovo from Serbia, the next step is to merge Kosovo to Albania.
For all who say that Macedonian government(mostly Macedonian, Christians) killed this 4 boys(Christians) and one older(40 years) man (also Christians), can they please explain:

If Albanians are not terrorist what they have slogans like "Kill the Christians" ?
If Albanians are not terrorist what they wave the Jihad flag ?
If Albanians are not terrorist what they are shouting "Allahu Akbar" (Allah is the Greatest)?
If Albanians are not terrorist what they are slogan "Islam will dominate the world" ?

Are you(Albanians) so retard, you organize meeting , where you throw with stones to all around you, shouting "Kill the Christians", "Allahu Akbar", images of Greater Albania, wave the Jihad flag and in the same time showing transparent "Not all Albanians are terrorist", "Islam is religion of peace" ??? Do you realize how this is so Contradictory ? Macedonia and the whole continent of Europe, have only 2 choice
to deal with the barbarian Muslims or to become Palestine.

  • Dear Sunny,

Probably the EurActiv and all those Albanians killing Macedonians, desecrating churches, waving Saudi flags and shouting against Christians and similar are actually paid by the Serbs and Macedonians. You are probably still expecting the news of the finally found weapons of mass destruction in Iraq and just as you believe of the Serbian atrocities and the official version of the collapse of Yugoslavia you believe that bombing of Libya was humanitarian and similar. Bravo Sunny!

  • Sunny, have you been in Macedonia ?
    Obviously NOT!

Albanians here have full education in Albanian language, They always have political party in power. They are equal, no one threat them bad. In Macedonia there is 1 mosque MORE than churches, did you know that fact? And here there are 70% orthodox Christian people.
We have situation, where we have special benefits and help programs specially for the Albanians, we are trying to civilize them, but with no success. Radical Islam spreads faster. Can you try explain please why will Macedonian(Christian) government build all mosque over night in every village? Where will Macedonia find all this money? And why? How can Macedonian government make 10 000 people, on the streets protesting agents Macedonia, saying all this bad things? Do you know that we in Macedonia have elections in every 2 years and that destabilization will lead in changing of the government. You see the is no logic Macedonian Christian government to work agents itself, promoting Islam, and destabilization the region that will led to change of the government.

So please before make some comment, please educate yourself about the region you are commenting. We are talking about human live that are lost here of innocent boys. It can happen again. We must stop radical Islam in Macedonia!

  • As a response to the majority of the comments: I don't think this article was meant to be a comprehensive review of the ethnic problems in Macedonia and the Balkans in general - that would take a whole series of history, political science, economics, etc. analyses and a bit more than 3 minutes of your life. For those of you that made good arguments on both sides, thank you for not wasting my time. For the rest of you, who used profanity and too much emotion without clear facts, grow up and look at the big picture! You sound like a bunch of 3-year-olds fighting over a toy. Because of people like you, and logic similar to yours, our part of Europe is in such a dire shape...

Background:

Macedonia declared independence from the dissolving Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia in 1991.

In official EU documents, Macedonia is referred to as "the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia" due to a dispute with Greece over the country's name, which is identical to that of a Greek province.

Macedonia is an ethnic mosaic. Slavic Macedonians represent the largest group (64% of the population). Ethnic Albanians are the biggest minority (25%), with Turks (3%) and Roma (1.9%) also present.

Since independence, integrating the ethnic Albanians has proved a cumbersome process, and the country has come close to civil war.

The August 2001 Ohrid Framework Agreement, brokered by Western powers, halted the brinkmanship between the ethnic-Albanian communities (organised militarily in the National Liberation Army) and Macedonian forces.
