The French Interior Ministry has drafted a law that will allow non-national EU citizens to stand in the next European Parliament elections, in line with the requirements of the Lisbon Treaty. EurActiv France reports.

British Prime Minister David Cameron's hopes of being re-elected in 2015 suffered a setback yesterday (15 September) when a poll showed an anti-European Union party had split the centre-right vote in dozens of decisive constituencies, leaving the path to Downing Street for Labour Ed Miliband.

Angela Merkel's allies swept to victory in a state election in Bavaria on Sunday, regaining the absolute assembly majority they lost in 2008 and providing a show of conservative strength for the chancellor a week before Germany goes to the polls.

Commission President José Manuel Barroso said yesterday (12 September) that he came up with the idea that European political parties present their candidate for the top EU job at the European Parliament elections in 2014, and regretted that little progress had been made in this direction.
