Breaking News:

Polish referendum on treaty would not bring certain ratification

Sir,

Regarding 'Polish opposition threatens EU Treaty ratification':

I would like to refer to the following sentence of your article: "Nevertheless, in Poland's case, even with a referendum, ratification seems almost certain, with latest polls showing more than 75% of citizens to be in favour of the Treaty".

Unfortunately, ratification via referendum is not at all certain in spite of Poles being in favour of the Treaty. As a matter of fact, in order to be valid, popular participation in the referendum must reach at least 50%, which might cause serious problems in Poland.

However, there is still hope that this step will not be necessary, as some PiS deputies are considering voting against the will of their leader Jaroslaw Kaczynski.
