Under the Luxembourg Presidency proposal, all MEPs would earn an equal amount of 7,000 euros a month after a transition period, which would last until the end of the next Parliament's term.
Currently, Members of the European Parliament are paid the same as members of their respective national parliaments. The result is that MEPs from Italy receive about 17 times as much money (12,000 euros) as their counterparts from Poland, who are being paid only 700 euros a month.
The proposal of the Luxembourg Presidency will be debated in the EP's Legal Affairs Committee on June 6, 2005. If the Committee should approve the proposal, it could be adopted by the Parliament's Plenary on June 22 and approved by the European Council on June 16 /17.
