The Commission has launched a public consultationexternal on whether and how to create a European Institute of Technology (EIT). Inspired by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), the Commission launched the idea of establishing an EIT as part of the "Knowledge and innovation for growth" -ambition of the Lisbon relaunch. The aim of such an institute would be to strengthen research, education and market innovation in Europe and to attract the best minds, ideas and businesses to Europe.

Stakeholders have until 15 November 2005 to give their viewsexternal . Based on the results of the consultation and a wider analysis by the Commission services, the Commission will decide whether EIT is really needed. It may then prepare a paper for the Spring European Council in March 2006, which will need to approve the idea before the Commission can make a formal legislative proposal.
