Satu Hassi, Gerben-Jan Gerbrandy and Jo Leiden yesterday (5 September) attributed Europe’s failed effort to win binding global commitments on resource conservation and green growth to opposition from emerging economies that feared putting brakes on their own economic growth.

“I think it’s very clear that in countries where a majority of the population is poor, it would be difficult to justify policies that limit economic development while the policies of the rich world can be seen as not accepting limitations,” said Hassi, a Green MEP from Finland.

Results of the study by the scientists from the Universities of Southampton, Portsmouth and East Anglia and the National Oceanography Centre will be used to create a statistical model of the distribution of excess phosphates and nitrates.

The model will show how far phosphates and nitrates transfer from rivers, through estuaries and into the coastal seas and the role that storms play in the process.

The team anticipates that this will give policymakers more informed decisions on how to reduce nitrate and phosphate pollution in estuaries.

From 1 September, an EU directive aimed at reducing the energy use of lighting means that retailers will no longer be allowed to sell 40W and 25W incandescent bulbs. Similar bans came into effect for 60W and 100W incandescent bulbs over the past three years. The restrictions are predicted to save 39 terawatt-hours of electricity across the EU annually by 2020.
