Background:
In a press conference after the Parliament approval of his nomination, Barroso announced that he wants to present his new team in the week of 23 August. He said that he expects Member States to give him a choice by nominating more than one possible commissioner. He also urged national governments to nominate female candidates, as the new Commission President wants to have at least eight women in his new team. The Member States have until 20 August to nominate their commissioners.

Some Member States and European industry had voiced their wish to appoint a 'supercommissioner' for economics and competitiveness to bring the EU's Lisbon agenda back on track. In his hearing before the Parliament, Barroso, however, seemed inclined not to follow this request, insisting that he needs not one but 24 supercommissioners (see

).
