The European Youth Forum's Council of Members (COMEM) adopted a Resolution on the EU White Paper on European Governance and the future of Europe at its meeting on 15-17 November 2001 in Athens, Greece. The Resolution is the European Youth Forum's contribution to the discussion on the Governance White Paper.

The Resolution:
  • encourages the European Commission to strengthen its links with young citizens in order to promote the further development of a European civil society and the empowerment of young people;
  • calls on the EU institutions and the national authorities to involve youth organisations in consultations on EU policies on all levels;
  • stresses the European Youth Forum's commitment to further contributing to the discussions on European Governance and the future of Europe, as well as to developing a European youth policy and to contributing to all initiatives that aim to enhance youth participation on the European level.

Background:
The EU institutions are encouraging more participation from organised civil society and a wide public debate on the reform of the institutions and on the future of Europe.

The promotion of new forms of governance is one of the Prodi Commission's four strategic priorities. The Commission published its White Paper on European Governance on 25 July 2001. Commission President Prodi sees the White Paper's main aim as being to decentralise the EU whilst improving the coherence of its policies in a bid to reconnect the Union with its citizens.

The European Youth Forum is an international organisation, established by national youth councils and international youth NGOs. It has 91 members, representing a wide range of interests, and brings together young people from over 40 European countries. It aims to serve the interests of young people in Europe, promoting their active participation in the construction of a common Europe and seeking to involve them in shaping a Europe based on democracy, human rights and mutual understanding.
