British Prime Minister Tony Blair calls general election for 7 June

One of the hot elements in the election campaign will be the UK's position in the European Union and its stance towards joining the euro. Mr. Blair has promised to hold a referendum on the European single currency within two years after his re-election. The Tory opposition is set to criticise Blair's pro-Europe campaign by accusing him of helping Europe to become a superstate and giving up British sovereignty.

Background:
British Prime Minister Tony Blair on Tuesday (8 May) called a general election for 7 June. Latest opinion polls indicate that Mr. Blair will probably increase his parliamentary majority and become the first Labour leader to win two consecutive terms in power.

Tony Blair's Labour party came into power in 1997 after 18 years of opposition. Labour currently has a 179-seats majority in the UK parliament.
