Who are Europe’s most dangerous politicians?

Published 08 August 2012

In a commentary published today (8 August), the German magazine Spiegel identifies the ten most aggressive politicians, who are fanning the flames on the euro crisis.

From Silvio Berlusconi to Marine Le Pen, some EU politicians “resort to cheap populism in order to rack up domestic political point” and are “grossly oversimplifying the situation, and … intensifying the euro crisis.”

Alexis Tsipras, the leader of Greece’s Syriza party has been highlighted as the ‘most dangerous man in Europe’, for his efforts to pressure governments into abandoning austerity measures.

Also on the list is Markus Soder, the Bavarian finance minister, who said this week that “Athens must become an example demonstrating that this euro zone also has teeth,” and that “Greece should leave the euro zone by the end of the year.” Like Soder, Timo Soini, a Finnish MEP wants aid to Greece to stop.

Both the Italian Silvio Berlusconi, and the French Marine Le Pen,  among others, are listed for campaigning for returning to national currencies. Berlusconi-owned newspaper Il Giornale raised up a storm last week when they captioned a picture of Angel Merkel with “Fourth Reich”.

Geert Wilders is on the list

Le Pen, along with Heinz-Christian Strache, head of the Austrian Freedom Party, make the list partially because of their dangerous hyperbole. Le Pen stated recently that “the European Commission is in the final stages of creating a European Soviet Union,” while Strache noted that the “[ESM] will destroy not only our state, but also our democracy and constitution.”

Another populist to make the cut is Nigel Farage, the prolific leader of the UK’s Independence Party, who famously described Council president Herman Van Rompuy as having “the charisma of a damp rag”.

Calling Geert Wilders, head of the Dutch Freedom Party, “the role model for many populists”, the Spiegel suggests that he has been turning to anti-EU sentiment to gain ground in the polls.

In a publicity stunt last year, he presented a large drachma note to the Greek embassy. Like Berlusconi and Le Pen, he is calling for a return of the national currency, the Dutch guilder.

Finishing up the hall of infamy is Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. He is alleged to have curbed democratic freedoms by imposing a restrictive media law and a new constitution, leading the European Commission to threaten to block subsidies. In response, some laws were modified, but Orbán claimed that “Hungary has prevailed”.

On the group of politicians as a whole, the Spiegel stressed that “they are playing with fire and they could threaten the entire European project. They are fueling, both directly and indirectly, stereotypes and resentments.”

The Spiegel accused them of doing so only to attract voters for their own gain and said that “all of this comes at the expense of a united Europe.”

COMMENTS

  • I don't disagree with the Spiegel list. However I do believe that If Spiegel wanted to be honest with itself it should also include Frau Merkel in the list of most dangerous politicians for Europe. Her obvious desire to please voters by appearing strong against the PIIGS and her monumental incompetence in working with the rest of the European governments in finding a consensus solutions as opposed to a "German" solution is leading to much more discontent for the European project among the people of Europe. It is also fueling stereotypes and resentment due to the well known German history. It would be good that the German press apart from being critical of everyone else does a bit of its own self-reflection. Otherwise publications of the quality of Spiegel are not in the final analysis very different from Stern or Bild

  • At least these 10 "Most Hated" help keep the Verhofstadt version of Europe at bay. Bit like having Stalin as best mate during the Great Misunderstanding of '39 -'45, we need them.

  • What else can the EU expect with their totally anti-democratic rulership? Geert Wilders exposed the totally overinflated salaries a week ago, and combining that with Brussels demand to increase payments by a generous percentage, while all European citizens are forced to reduce their own salaries, pensions, have to work longer.

No wonder the piggy politicians in the political pluche in Brussels are not trusted anymore. They screwed it up themselves by totally ignoring how the European citizens denounce their greed and blatant arrogance.

This with the damage that has been created many years ago by allowing lying and defrauding nations to join the EU, with no sanctions for breaking the strict rules

Also take into account the 3% national growth underlimit some years ago that France and Germany committed to, but could not make and were never punished for). How can they then apply that same rule to other member states?

And now the European citizens are only seeing more money fleeing to Greece, as a reward for lying, thieving and defrauding behaviour in the past and present.

And all of this without ANY say of the European people? This is not a democracy.

  • It is such a lie to pretend we are outraged discovering that greek finances are a mess or spanish spectulation in the building sector is a joke... It's been 10 years everybody knows it very well and we were very happy by then to lend them money, sell them BMWs and TGVs... it saved us jobs and trade balance so coming up now saying "Oh my god, how could they possibly have dared these pigs" is absolutly ridiculous for we are, if not more, as much responsable as them of their situation... which is soon going to become ours quiete fairly...

  • These ten might not have the solutions to the problems facing Europe (and the world) but they are NOT the "most dangerous politicians"!

That title goes to the heads in the sand leaders who are either NOT facing the realities of internal stress between sovereign states who must CONCEDE more, not less of their individual sovereignty if the EU is to have a future.

Too many in positions of authority choose to ignore the problem while pursuing covert alternate objectives.

This list is headed by none other than Angela Merkel.

  • Some official German trade figures – “the UK was the biggest market for German passenger vehicle exports during the first half of 2011 both in terms of volume and value. During the first half of 2011, Germany exported 382,000 cars worth €6.8 billion to Britain. (source Statistisches Bundesamt Deutschland). Doubt very much the German motor manufacturers would want to erect any trade barriers between the UK and the EU which might damage that golden egg!

Let’s be polite to each other and recognise that both sides want something which can be achieved. The EU creates a US of E, assuming their electorates actually want it. The UK is given the option of joining such an entity and the people are asked directly. If this is rejected then it falls back to a mutually profitable trading arrangement with no political dimension.

The WTO is there specifically to resolve tariff issues and the idea that the EU could tax any one country without much wider trade implications involving many other countries is fantasy and should be treated as such.

  • I am sure we all support democracy.

    Well perhaps not all,

“I can understand that they must show consideration for their parliament. But at the end of the day, every country in the European Union has a parliament as well as a constitutional court. And of course each government must orient itself according to decisions made by parliament. But every government also has a duty to educate parliament………. If governments let themselves be fully bound by the decisions of their parliaments without protecting their own freedom to act, a breakup of Europe would be a more probable outcome than deeper integration”

Mario Monti the EU appointed Italian Prime Minister interviewed by Der Spiegel 06/08/12; stating categorically that governments do not need to be bound by the decisions of the elected representatives but can instead ‘educate parliament’.
    http://www.spiegel.de/international/europe/interview-on-the-euro-crisis-with-italian-prime-minister-mario-monti-a-848511.html

I can see now how all my fears about the lack of democracy in the EU are misplaced.

  • These people are saints compared to those who have in relatively terms left the world economy in turmoil. Blair, Brown and Bush to name the three main political strategists of long-tem economic decline. Indeed economic decline is far more inflicting than conventional warfare including world wars as they go on for decades until the former that last a 4>6 years.

The past cannot be made right, but where hopefully we never get people like Bush, Blair and Brown running the world again, as that would be a further disaster that the world could not support morally or economically support.

  • EU politicians and civil servants should take a big pay cut and set an example for the populations they have asked to accept austerity . Also look at the politicians who occupy key positions and what countries they come from , not exactly the best people for the posts with the best professionl success.
A large percentage of EU citizens do not like the untouchability of the EU commissioners and their unchecked
power , this is unacceptable in a democratic society .
Either the EU institutions and politicians have to improve and be more accountable and punishable or more and more citizens will favour a dissolution of the EU and the Euro.

  • PG.

Unfortunately there is more chance of finding a snowball in hell than EU politicians and their civil servants taking a pay cut. Okay for everyone else that they dictate too, but surely not they who impose think up these austerity measures for the good of all, or is it for the good solely of them is the big question? The sooner the whole thing is shut down unless there is a great sea-change in the thinking and fixed mindsets of the EU decision-makers the better, as the only ones creaming it all off all the time is the fat over-blotted EU csars, their exorbitant paid civil servants and so-called wise advisers who have never got it right from day one and where clearly they have not a clue to get our economies moving. This shown as clear as day for the latter gravy train group, as the dire state of affairs of the European Union can fully attest. Purely just draining and sucking the economic bloood out of the system that we EU citzens pay for and basically take on all the debt that they all create.
