The cartel unit of the European Commission is conducting a serious investigation into price-fixing by national brewers.

Background:

The cartel unit of the European Commission is conducting a serious investigation into price-fixing and market division by national brewers. According to the Financial Times, the Commission is expected to take action against a beer cartel in Belgium before August. In the beginning of this year, Commission officials raided offices of brewers in Italy, France, the Netherlands and Belgium.

Under EU anti-cartel rules, the brewers could be fined up to 10 percent of revenues if found guilty of anti-competitive practices.
