The liberal FDP is the big winner of the regional elections in Germany's largest regional state Nordrhein-Westfalen

Background:

The liberal FDP is the big winner of the regional elections in Germany's largest regional state Nordrhein-Westfalen. Contrary to expectations, the reigning socialdemocratic party (SPD) lost more than 3%. The CDU managed to stabilise, but was severely hurt by the recent fraud scandals of their federal party structures. The Greens lost over 2% and might have a difficult time negotiating a new governmental coalition for the region.

These elections will lead to serious internal party discussions on the federal level, as the return of the FDP could foreshadow a possible coalition SPD-FDP after the next Bundestag elections of 2002.
