On the first of May, just four days before the second round of the presidential elections, more than a million people have demonstrated all over France against the rise of the extreme right Front National.

Background:
In Paris, between 400,000 and 900,000 citizens took to the streets on Labour Day to express their opposition to the Front National, the extreme right party of Jean-Marie Le Pen. Mr Le Pen unexpectedly won nearly 17 per cent of votes in the first round of the elections, winning a ticket to the second round. In the rest of France, as much as 900,000 people demonstrated to show their disapproval.

According to a poll conducted by IPSOS, 74 to 81 per cent of Frenchmen intend to vote for Jacques Chirac next Sunday, against 19 to 26 per cent for Jean-Marie Le Pen. 62 per cent of participants said they regretted the first round's results.

The second round will take place on Sunday 5 May 2002.
