A Spanish judge closed down the Basque political party Batasuna, declaring it part of the armed separatist group ETA, and the Spanish Parliament started a procedure to declare Batasuna illegal.

Background:
The 24-year old party is barred from holding political rallies or demonstrations and from running in municipal elections, scheduled for May 2003. Its members of parliament will be allowed to serve out their terms.

At the same time, the lower house of the Spanish Parliament passed legislation by a vote of 295 to 10, formally asking that the government start procedures for the Supreme Court to outlaw the party permanently.

The Batasuna party denies any link to ETA, but it refuses to condemn attacks blamed on the separatist organisation which has killed over 800 people over the last 34 years in its fight for self-determination for the Basques.
