At the 6 December conference "21st Century Publishing in Europe" both Commissioners Reding and Wallström, as well as industry experts, addressed competitiveness and freedom of expression.

Commissioner Wallström explained her "plan D" to launch better communication of the EU, and invited publishers to participate in the consultation on the upcoming white paper.

Google's initiative to publish online extracts of books (see EurActiv, 31 August) is creating both interest and some concern regarding the copyright aspects. Dr. Arne Bach, President of the Federation of European Publishers, explained a German counter-initiative, called "fulltext Suche". Others welcomed new internet opportunities and highlighted the need for a modernized legal framework and new business models.

Commissioner Reding, in charge of information society and the media, confirmed that non-TV publishers will not be covered by the revised TV without frontiers directive, but intends to allow product placement on TV films despite resistance from print publishers. The conference was organised by the publishing federations listed below.
