New smartphone launches compatibility furore

The Apple iPhone 5, launched in shops today (21 September) in some European countries, has come under fire from consumer groups for its new connecter, which renders old devices obsolete.

ANEC, a Brussels-based European consumer standardisation group, criticised the smartphone in a statement yesterday, saying it was "dismayed that Apple seems ready to exploit its loyal fans by expecting them to pay for the fixes necessary to make Lightning [the new connecter] compatible with all the existing devices using the 30-pin dock connecter."

All Apple devices had used the so-called 30-pin dock connecter since the iPod MP3 player was launched in 2003. All devices, such as dock chargers and hi-fis, designed to be compatible with previous Apple products, will become unusable with Lightning.

Apple promises that it will offer consumers accessories to connect the iPhone to those devices, but these will come at a price. EurActiv understands an adapter will cost some €19.

ANEC said that because the iPhone 5 does not make use of the so-called 'micro-USB' connector used by other smartphones, Apple should offer this adapter free-of-charge.

The consumer group's secretary-general, Stephen Russell, expressed his disappointment with the move since Apple had "established itself as the cultural icon of the 21st century".

Russell said the lack of EU-wide harmonisation of phone chargers had been "wasteful" of environmental resources as well as having "taken advantage of consumers". He called for a universal charger for all mobile devices, including tablets and digital cameras.

In recent months the smartphone market has become volatile due to their extreme profitability, with each company attempting to deal a 'killer blow' to their competitors.

The Verge, a US technology news network owned by Vox media, said a "tremendous number of people will be affected" by the new technology.

The news outlet said a number of companies were "rising to the challenge" to try to come up with devices that can be used with the Lightning connector.

  • When somebody mentions Apple I always think of P.T.Barnum and his phrase: a sucker born every minute. I don't suppose he and Jobs were related by any chance?

  • The universal charger regulation is a great idea which should have been implement already. Since it hasn't been, why not include a universal headphone plug while you're at it?

  • I have only ipod but that is a real problem if you have an Dock or soundsystem with that "old" connetor....
This mean that you couldn't connect it even on a Boomblaster JVC RV-NB 50 or 70 !
Apple is too propritetary and even expensive for what it îs!
Ok You get an adapter but why should pay for it and even it is not guaranteed that it it will fits stable on the Dock slots ...

    Simply crazy....

  • Apple is a marketing machine, its true that they invest heavily in reaserch and development but then they try to make up for the investment through such strategies. It is also a fact that apple have high quality products but they charge a lot extra for that.

Another issu with such strategy is electronic waste. I change my mobile phone almost every 2 years and i ended up with various chargers as they do not match between different models(even when the mobile was of the same brand). However, lately, more and more brands are making use of micro USB to charge devices so i no longer end up with unused chargers and connectors. This should be the way to go, big companies should have more respect for the environment and also for their customers.

  • Isn't this criticism all a bit artificial? For 19 EUR you can buy a micro USB adapter. Anyone who pays +650 EUR for an Iphone should be able to afford this.

Far more interesting would have been to talk in the article about the EU regulation on universal chargers and why iPhones are not covered by it.

  • In answer to Brusselsblogger, the iPhone IS covered by the Voluntary Agreement that the Commission signed with fourteen manufacturers in 2009 (regrettably, it is far from a regulation). In response to what we understand was pressure from Apple, a clause was added to that agreement which allows the use of an adaptor between the "universal charger" and the device. One can argue whether the 19€ is a trivial sum or not to the individual consumer (although further adaptors are need to make Lightning compatible with the 30 pin dock connector) but it is not a trivial sum in terms of financial cost, or in cost in raw materials, when multiplied across the many millions of Apple customers.
