The Competitiveness Council has adopted the directive simplifying and consolidating existing legislation on recognition of professional qualifications without debate.

The new professional services directive will ensure an easy and quick system for recognition by member states of each others' professional qualifications. Teachers, doctors, nurses, pharmacists, architects and other professionals will, as a result of the simplified legislation, have more opportunities to travel and work in other EU member states.

The Council accepted several amendments introduced by the European Parliament in May 2005, notably on more supervisory power for the host country to run checks on professionals from other countries.

Germany and Greece voted against the proposed directive, Luxembourg abstained.

The new legislation will enter into force in 2007.
