MEPs have lifted parliamentary immunity for French far-right leader Marine Le Pen, the outspoken politician who is expected to face criminal charges over racist remarks. EurActiv France reports.

In a secret vote, the European Parliament’s legal committee backed the recommendation to remove immunity for Le Pen, ahead of a vote in plenary expected on 3 July.

Le Pen is facing possible prosecution for comparing Islamic immigration in France to the ‘Nazi occupation.’

At a political rally in December 2010, she said Muslims were praying in the streets of France where there were no mosques. "For those who like to talk about World War II, to talk about occupation, we could talk about, for once, the occupation of our territory," Le Pen told the rally. "There are no armoured vehicles, no soldiers, but it is an occupation all the same and it weighs on people."

Her father and predecessor as National Front president, Jean-Marie Le Pen, was convicted for making racist comments and was stripped of his immunity for having denied the Holocaust in 1998.

“Marine Le Pen is an extremist right-wing politician who has campaigned fervently against the EU, but who now wants the EU to protect her from her own country’s prosecuting system,” said Sajjad Karim, a British Tory MEP on the parliament's legal affairs committee.

"There is a red line between freedom of speech and inciting racial hatred," he said. "Using Nazi occupation in France as a comparison to Muslims praying on the street is appalling, insulting and highly inflammatory on so many levels.”

"Her remarks do the complete opposite of trying to forge a social fabric of peace, understanding and respect," Karim said.

COMMENTS

  • I believe the European Union to be a fascist organisation very much like the Nazis of the 1930s.

The first casualty of fascism is free speech and it is not up to Sajjad Karim to be the judge of what I say or don't say.

There, if the European Union wishes to exclude me from their nasty little club I will happily accept their decision.

  • There is more racism exhibited by North Africans, Arabs and Central Africans than by any White Europeans

  • Marine Le Pen was right in using the parrallels of foreigners trying to enforce their beliefs on a country they have chosen to live in. The answer is simple either keep your religion where it belongs or go to a country where your behaviour is acceptable. I have no doubt anyone having sex in the street because they are homeless wouldn't get the same support even though hey would have a better argument for having done it.

  • @Richard Prior RE: There is more racism exhibited by North Africans, Arabs and Central Africans than by any White Europeans
Racism is dehumanizing and has no boundaries, the fact that it is exhibited by North Africans, Arabs and Central Africans does not make it acceptable or tolerable.
One does not need to be at the receiving end of racism to appreciate that it is primarily an assault on human dignity.

  • "Comparing Islamic immigration in France to the ‘Nazi occupation" even a lot more of such speeches ...
And now she is going to pray for help in Brüssel !???
How ironic and at the same time more crazy than crazy !
She is trying to kiss backs for advantages to get out of her own mistakes !
Maybe she need to be more diplomatic on her speech but unfortunately she lacks on this feature .

You comment tell us that you don't know how cheese is made of !

We don't need and don't want a fascist party because FN created a sub party called "JNR" leaded by Serge Ayoub which one skinhead supporter killed already one french citizen (Clement Méric even not muslim )!
The best comes now: Ayoub doesn't sound french or does it ?
    By the way ....

Le Pens intentions goes far beyond french proudness and has nothing more to do with Egalité Fraternité Liberté !!

Finally we are living in a World where we need peace together !

  • @an european

You may have mistaken my support of free speech for support of Marine Le Pen.

My political opinions are my own, your opinions are your own, but no purpose is served by denying a voice to either of those opinions.

That is fascism in my world.

    I'm sorry if i offend you ..

About your comment : "That is fascism in my world"

Facts are you lack the real difference of definition between Fascism and not fascism !!
BUT TREATING the European Union as fascism Your lack of political acknowledge to take even the EU as a black sheep

Indeed your support of free speech for support of Le Pen doesn't interest me and it's as long as wide for me ;-)

It seems you have never lived under Franco Francisco's rules ...

  • “Marine Le Pen is an extremist right-wing politician who has campaigned fervently against the EU"

Almost all euroskeptics are Nazis, and almost all Nazis are euroskeptics. Marine Le Pen is one more example of it.
