Ministers of Justice and Home Affairs vow to intensify fight against trafficking in humans and sexual exploitation of children

Background:

Ministers of Justice and Home Affairs vowed during their two-day informal meeting in Stockholm to intensify the fight against trafficking in humans and the sexual exploitation of women and children. Justice Commissioner Vitorino said the 15 EU Member States should agree before summer 2001 on common sanctions concerning sentences between 6 and 10 years for traffickers.

The EU currently estimates some 500,000 women and girls alone enter Europe as illegal immigrants every year.
