Water efficiency: What role for infrastructure? [fr]

Thursday, May 10, 2012 - 17:00 - 19:00
European Parliament , room JA6Q1
Rue Wiertz 60
Brussels
Belgium
The European Commission is expected to issue a ‘Blueprint for Safeguarding Europe’s Water’ in 2012. The
aim of this policy initiative is to introduce a ‘water-saving culture’ in Europe building on the Roadmap to a Resource Efficient Europe. The paper will focus on increasing water savings, emphasising agriculture, water supply infrastructures and buildings.

  • The amount of water lost in the public supply system is as high as 50% in the EU. What measures can be taken to enhance savings on the supply side?
  • Rain water is said to be a solution that would reduce the strain on rivers and lakes and help save water in general. How can we encourage developments of water capture and stocking?
  • Water leakage is one of the main issues in the water debate. How can we ensure a more efficient infrastructure to prevent the losses? Is there a need for efficiency standards for water using devices or an EU water efficiency labeling scheme?
  •  Some industry areas are the focus of water related legislative proposals (e.g. agriculture, construction, manufacturing etc.). What can be done in terms of technological innovation for water savings?

Fondation EurActiv is pleased to invite you to a debate to explore answers to these questions.
