Danes ring the alarm over EU energy savings bill [fr]

Danes ring the alarm over EU energy savings bill

“It’s true that the member states have been more eager to water down the [energy efficiency] rates than support them,” Martin Lidegaard, the Danish climate minister told EurActiv on the fringes of the London clean energy summit on Wednesday (25 April).

“Some of the articles in the directive – especially Article 6 – have been too watered down and, if we should have a chance to reach agreement with the European Parliament, we have to increase the ambition level of that article again,” he said.

Denmark, the country currently holding the rotating EU Presidency, has hit out at EU countries for defanging the proposed Energy Efficiency Directive, and called for ring-fencing a key article imposing an annual 1.5% energy savings target on power companies.

Greece denounces Turkish 'blackmail' on border issues

Chrisochoidis, a Socialist, blasted French President Nicolas Sarkozy for threatening to shut down Greece from Europe's  Schengen passport-free travel zone because of difficulties in controlling its border with Turkey.

Addressing the Parliament's civil liberties, justice and home affairs committee (LIBE), Michalis Chrisochoidis described in dramatic terms the situation faced by Greece and accused France of a lack of solidarity which he said was motivated by electoral interests.

Greece cannot control its borders without the cooperation of its Turkish neighbour, Greek Minister for Citizen Protection Michalis Chrisochoidis told the European Parliament on Wednesday (25 April), denouncing France's lack of solidarity on the matter and Turkey's attempts at "blackmail".

MEPs 'compromise' on resource efficiency roadmap

MEPs 'compromise' on resource efficiency roadmap

Gerben-Jan Gerbrandy, the Dutch Liberal MEP who drafted the report, received support from his colleagues on most points but some of his “innovative” ideas were deleted from the text in an effort to find a compromise.

The non-binding report was adopted by the Parliament's environment committee on 25 April with 48 votes in favour, 3 against and 5 abstentions.

The European Parliament's environment committee backed a proposed resource efficiency roadmap for Europe on 25 April, marking an important step in EU policymakers' efforts to decouple natural resource use from economic growth. However, in an effort to find a compromise, they left aside proposed ambitious deadlines and measures.

Ukraine signals possible solution to Tymoshenko case [fr]

Ukraine signals possible solution to Tymoshenko case

Khoroshkovskiy, a former head of the State Security Service of Ukraine and a close ally of President Viktor Yanukovich, said that if the Tymoshenko case was the only unsettled issue in EU-Ukraine relations "we'll settle it too".

Former Prime Minsiter Yulia  Tymoshenko is serving a seven-year prison term for abuse of power, an issue which has strained relations between the EU and Ukraine and practically frozen negotiations over a much-anticipated free trade agreement.

Meeting with journalists in Brussels yesterday (25 April), Ukrainian First Deputy Prime Minister Valeriy Khoroshkovskiy said that if "all problems" between Ukraine and the EU were solved, the Parliament in Kyiv could pass extraordinary legislation to set former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko free from jail.

Schulz: EU collapse is a 'realistic scenario' [fr]

Schulz: EU collapse is a 'realistic scenario'

“In the past few months we have witnessed a disturbing trend towards renationalisation and ‘summitisation’: the Heads of State and Government are arrogating more and more decisions to themselves, debating and taking decisions behind closed doors and in disregard of the Community method,” thundered Schulz.

Speaking in front of the College of Commissioners he underscored the need for an even closer cooperation between the Commission and Parliament. That “is an important sign that we are defending the Community method with determination.”

The collapse of the European Union  is a "realistic scenario," as member states are claiming back power, xenophobia  is increasing and so are calls to reintroduce border controls, said the president of the European Parliament, Martin Schulz.

Parliament begins scrutiny of EU airport noise rules [fr]

Parliament begins scrutiny of EU airport noise rules

The European Commission wants to end the "many inconsistencies" as to how noise restriction measures are put in place across the EU, saying they may hinder the development of extra capacity in the bloc's already crowded airports.

European Commission plans to ease noise restriction measures around airports has been met with scepticism by the MEP in charge of the dossier in Parliament, who believes the EU executive is placing economic considerations above citizen's concerns.

Survey: Skills investment slashed despite dearth [fr]

Survey: Skills investment slashed despite dearth

Skills will top the agenda at the summit, which will be attended by Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti, Belgian premier Elio Di Rupo, European Commission President José Manuel Barroso, with more than 1,000 European business leaders and policymakers.

But with the economic and debt crisis rambling on, the news are not positive on the jobs and skills front, the main theme of this year's summit.

Most European employers (86%) cut or froze their investments in training last year despite ongoing skills shortages and must take urgent remedial action, business and political leaders converging in Brussels for the 2012 European Business Summit will hear today.

Liberals put last nail in ACTA coffin [fr]

Liberals put last nail in ACTA coffin

The Alliance of Liberals and Democrats in the European Parliament announced yesterday at a press conference that they cannot support ACTA. Although the European liberals supported the protection of intellectual property rights, they were concerned that ACTA contravened fundamental rights and freedoms, explained their leader Guy Verhofstadt.

The liberal ALDE group in the European Parliament jumped onto the bandwagon to oppose the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA) by declaring yesterday (25 April) that they will vote against it, as "too many provisions" were "unclear". In case a plenary vote was held before the summer, a majority of MEPs would therefore reject ACTA.

Merkel backs Draghi's call for growth pact [fr]

Merkel backs Draghi's call for growth pact

"We've had a fiscal compact. Right now what is most present in my mind is to have a growth compact," he told the European Parliament, calling for this to be founded on Europe's 'six pack' of tighter budgetary rules.

He pressed eurozone states to pursue structural reforms to help generate this growth, saying the ECB's contribution was to deliver stable prices.

European Central Bank President Mario Draghi urged eurozone governments to shape-up their economies and called for an EU "growth compact," which Germany backed, rejecting charges that they support only austerity measures to solve the debt crisis.
