With the European news agenda dominated by doom and gloom, EU business associations sought to underline the positives at their annual Brussels event.

The British government has opened a consultation to introduce the first statutory register of lobbyists in Westminster, drawing on the experience of a similar transparency register in Brussels, which went online last year.

Denmark has set aside only €35 million for its EU presidency, a fraction of what other countries have spent for their term of duty. Despite the low cost, the country promises an efficient and competent presidency, its European Affairs Minister Nicolai Wammen told journalists in Copenhagen yesterday (9 January).

In an effort to increase budget efficiency, while maintaining salaries at the same level, the Commission is asking officials to work longer hours without giving additional compensation or other sweeteners. EurActiv has spoken with European Commission Vice-President Maroš Šefčovič, as intensive negotiations with the staff unions are underway.
