Royal SocietyResearch Councils UK  and the Wellcome Trust funded study examines the factors affecting science communication by scientists and provides a series of recommendations for actions to encourage scientists and engineers to communicate with the public, media and policy makers.

The study, entitled Factors affecting science communication, argues that, in British universities, a 'research driven' culture, the pressure to publish research, to attract funding to their departments and build career on 'hard research' are key barriers to scientists communicating their work with the public.

The study shows that scientists even think that public engagement activities are bad for their careers as they are seen as being done by those who are 'not good enough' for an academic career.
