Analysis: R&D investment and economic growth

A joint United States Bureau of Economic Analysis and National Science Foundation report suggests that R&D accounted for a substantial share of the resurgence in the United States' growth in recent years.

The R&D satellite account: preliminary estimates paper presents estimates of the effect of investment in research and development on United States economic growth for the years 1959–2002 and of the impact that the treatment of R&D as investment (instead of as an expense) would have on gross domestic product (GDP) and gross domestic income (GDI).

This lays the ground work for incorporating R&D as an asset into thenational income and product accounts. Final estimates are scheduled to be released in the fall of 2007.
