Estonia appoints Kallas as EU Commissioner

Former Prime Minister Siim Kallas has been named as Estonia’s official candidate for the post of EU Commissioner.

Background

Prime Minister Juhan Parts said on 15 January 2004 that his predecessor, Siim Kallas, is Estonia's official candidate for the post of EU Commissioner (seeEurActiv 16 December 2003for a list of likely EU Commissioner candidates from the new Member States).

Mr Kallas, 55, had also served as finance minister and foreign minister before becoming prime minister.

He was succeeded by Mr Parts in March 2003. He also heads the pro-business Reform Party.
