EU imposes sanctions against Zimbabwe

On Monday 18 February, the EU Foreign Ministers decided to take action against Zimbabwe.

Following the expulsion from Zimbabwe on Saturday, of the Head of EU's delegation of election observers, Mr. Pierre Schori, the EU Foreign Ministers yesterday decided to introduce sanctions against Zimbabwe. The sanctions include:

  • an arms embargo;
  • a travel ban and the freezing of the economic assets of Mr. Mugabe and 19 of his closest political associates;
  • the EU will not send observers to the elections on 9-10 March 2002.

On Monday 19 February, the General Affairs Council also announced the EU's readiness to take part in the UN's international police task force in Bosnia and Herzegovina from 1 January 2003. The EU will send 500 men. This will constitute the first deployment of the EU's Rapid Reaction Force.
