The European Commission presented on Tuesday plans to shorten and simplify visa-procedures for non-EU nationals wishing to travel to the EU for short stays.

According to the EU executive, making the access to the Schengen area easier for “legitimate” travellers” will facilitate visiting friends and relatives and doing business.

“Every year too many potential tourists are discouraged from visiting Europe. This is not only a problem for those who are waiting but it also implies a serious loss for Europe’s economy and we do not rip the benefits that they could bring.” said Home Affairs Commissioner Cecilia Malmström.
