TTIP transparency transformed by campaigners, says EU Ombudsman

Civil society organisations campaigning for greater transparency in the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) have transformed the way it, and perhaps other future trade deals, are negotiated, the European Ombudsman has told EurActiv.

Emily O’Reilly, who investigates maladministration in the European institutions, said, “Before, these things were carried out largely behind close doors, people only saw them at the very end.”

“There is a new player in the game, and it’s partly through social media, it’s the directness with which they can approach issues, it’s the speed in which they can get campaigns together. They have had a shocking impact on these negotiations,” O’Reilly added.
