Disability: EU Ombudsman to look into Commission's actions to fight discrimination

EU Ombudsman Nikiforos Diamandouros has opened an own-initiative investigation into measures taken by the Commission to ensure that there is no discrimination against disabled people.

Background: 
The EU Ombudsman, Nikiforos Diamandouros, has announced that he is examining the measures taken by the Commission to ensure that disabled people are not discriminated against in their relations with the institution. The Ombudsman is looking into whether the Commission fulfils its legal obligations and stated commitments in this area.

The Commission has until the end of February 2004 to inform the Ombudsman about the timetable of the actions it has taken or intends to take in order to ensure that people with disabilities are not discriminated against. The results of the inquiry will be published on the

website of the EU Ombudsman.
